Good enough

Its okay for your first draft to be crappy.
No paper is perfect, just settle for good enough.
Even Mark Twain's work is not perfect.

I need to wright a first draft and write it to be as good as possible.

Living sources.

-Your list of questions are more of a guideline you will most likely stray away from your list of questions.
-Before writing your surveys you should define the goals and audience.
-You can create an online survey using surveymonkey.com.
I plan to interview a couple of my friends face to face and ask them specific questions regarding facebook.
I also plan on creating a survey on surveymonkey and using facebook to send the survey to my friends. With facebook I can tell them why they should do my survey and what not.

Lit review Reflections

  1. From the first draft of the lit reveiw I learned what actually should be included. I learned what I need to do to complete that portion of my paper. I am missing most of the content of the lit review.
  2. The paper needs a lit review section to introduce your sources. This part will discuss other peoples research on a similar topic. It is a justification of our work.
  3. The research in most of my articles is new information to me. I would like to talk about communictaion among college students and social networks. The other researchers I have looked at discuss similar but different topics.
  4. I would like to interview friends and other current students on their social networking use. I also would like to observe their use. Their communication with other people is important to my research.

He says she says

I read chapter three and four wasn't included in the reading so I couldn't read it. One of the main points in chapter three is that you need to frame your quotations. When you frame the quotes you introduce them properly. You also need to explain a quote thoroughly before moving on to a new topic. Another main point is a way to introduce your quotations. The author gives you a list of example ways to introduce quotes. The author also give you a list of ways to explain quotations. The last main point is where the author tells you about over explaining a quote. He says in contrast though, it is better to over analyze than under explain a quote. These is helpful for my writing because I will have more ways to introduce and explain quotations. He also tells me how to frame a quote so it can be introduced and such.

How is twitter affecting college students communication in the US today vs. 2005 before it's invention?

I am writing about twitter and the culture that surrounds it. I will focus on trends and other things associated with twitter. I am wrting for non-twitter users (people who don't really know about twitter) to see how people interact on twitter vs. 2005 when twitter was being born. I assume that people are more involved in twitter speaking there mind on their than talking to their friends about their  issues. I hope to know why people vent on twitter, what makes twitter so apealing, and why people dedicate a lot of their time to it. I will interview people who have twitter, I will look at my twitter news feed, observe and take notes.

How is twitter affecting communication today?

My research question listed above is very interesting to me. It interests me because I can't image life without twitter facebook and texting. My parents grew up fine without any of those things and now life for every person my age revolves around them. This topic does not relate to my disipline, because I really cannot think of a math topic that I am interested at the moment. There should be lots of accurate information to answer my question. This topic is easy to collect data from, all I have to do is log into my twitter account and take notes about trends and stuff. I feel like a lot of people aren't using my topic, but they should because it is very interesting.

Researching and Post-it notes

Susanas article gave me new strategies to get ready to start my research. First you need to gather your materials, second go threw the article and read critically and post-it note important information, and third you should walk away from your research until you have had a good break and then start it up again. This is really helpful because its hard to do all your research in one sitting. Her article is going to help my research for papers in this and other classes.

One in six million

This article is very interesting and easy to read. This tells me that if I find something I am passionate about researching the topic will be easy and fun. It also showed me how the author had to email people and research everywhere just find a small lead.

Linguistic Landscape Project

I would like to work with the genre of posters. I would like to use the topic equal rights for LGBT community. They can be posted in many places to get your point across. Posters are also hard to miss. There usually is a quick informative title and a larger font for important information because people aren't going to stand there and read the whole thing normally. You can either type up posters or create them with markers. Doors, garbage cans, and walls all around the quad are great places. They are good places because everyone walks by these items and they should be able to see it.

Susana Rodriguez article

Susana Rodriguez's article restated my views about apple. I like their products but their ads really jump out at you and make you think you need to have the product. This reminds me of the two image analysises we did in class a couple weeks ago, I chose one of these apple ads as well. Apple really knows how to make art tell you something which can really sell their products.

read reading visual texts: a bullet for your arsenal by susana rodrigez grassroot digital reserve

Two visual texts

Banksy produced both of my picutres, he is an graffiti artist all around the world. Both texts are on a brick wall. The features of both genres change the content. These are both graffiti as a genre, they normally are on the side of buildings under bridges mainly in random places so everyone can see. The beggar he is stating that he wants change not coins, he doesn't care about the money he wants a better society. The soldier is peeing in public while wearing his uniform, this can show a lack of respect to britain because even the soldiers are breaking laws. Random passerbys are the focus of both these pictures.  Everybody walking by the art work are the audience.

Interview for class different languages

I interviewed Willi from germany.  His family is from east germany. They have a specific east german accent, so if I was from west germany I would be able to tell where they were from by the way theytalk. His parents grew up in east germany, and now they moved to west germany.  West germany doesn't have an identifiable accent because they are known to speak very straight forward german.  His parents are slowly losing their accents and adapting to their new home and language.  In work Willi's parents speak more formal. They are both scientists so they have their own specific language. This language ties into their job.  Willi grew up in west germany with a more accentless german. They all speak english for work in his parents case. Willi speaks french as well as english.

Personal and changing genres.

When writing a personal essay when you start to feel uncomfortable then you're writing it well. It will become a narrative unless you go really into depth. When critiquing genres you need to make compelling arguments about how and why the genre does in fact fail or succeed in some way.

Blogging about language

My family has more of a northern wisconsinite accent.  I speak now in an Illinois chicagoian accent.  I feel more attached to the Illinois accent because I have been using it for so long. My family pronounces common words slightly different than I do because I live in Illinois.  I code switch between school and with friends.  In school I will be more formal and use fancier words. In contrast with my friends I use less formal words and more slang words.  My languages are both recognized in school with a heavier weight on the formal school language.  I can somewhat see my languages represented in class assignments, of course it will have more formal words because it is a school assignment.

From the outside in

1) Mellix's title describes her struggle to be black american and speak proper english, she has to try semi hard to speak in the proper tongue.
3) To whites standard english was the norm. To blacks it seemed something you do to become more formal.  She had to try really hard to speak in the standard tone but eventually it became easier.

Graduation Party

My grandfather Pete Dehnert is a very impactful person in my life. He is 70 years old and still going strong. He looks like an older in shape six foot tall man. He is very outgoing, funny, and caring/giving. My grandfather is very good at owning businesses and running them and has ran multiple businesses in Madison, Wi. He is very good at having a fun time, I go skiing with him every summer. In the winter I travel to Colorado to go snow skiing with him, everytime I see him I have a blast. The only weakness he has that I can think of is cancer. A couple of years ago he was diagnosed with cancer and it was devastating. Now he is fully recovered and virtually a new man, hopefully he is done with this disease. His goal in life is to work the rest of his life and enjoy every minute of it. He also would like to get a brand new ragtop camaro. He speaks like an average american that grew up in wisconsin, with many jokes added into his speech.
This year he threw me a graduation party at our cabin in northern wisconsin. Family and family friends were invited to come celebrate my graduation with me. When I got there I saw this huge tent, a beautiful lake, and our beautiful ginormous cabin. All around you can hear music playing and a waterski boat driving around the lake. There are many smells that catch your attention, like the campfire, wonderful food, and the smell of the lake in the air. The food was great you could taste delectible barbeque pulled pork, sode, and chips and dip. I felt very thankful that he went out of his way to throw me this party.

Why we speak spanish

1) They haven't adopted english because their used to speaking spanish and it is easier to them.
4) If she was talking to a non bilingual person she would speak english around them.  If I was bilingual I would do the same thing around people who can only speak english.
1)Its powerful because its on common theme everyone in america has to deal with.
2) This genre is valuble because it gets right to the point, and is easy to read.

Three ideas from Erin Frost and Jordana Hall

A quad chart is a genre in writing that is used in organizational administration, vehicle design and when applying for government grant.  This is important if you want to propose a new vehicle design or other technical things.  The grassroots book has two main titles for different purposes.  One title is less specific than the other one and has a smaller font this is more of an overview and the other bigger title is more specific.  When you write a book publishers are responsible for advertising and marketing aspects of a book as well as physical production.  This is important because the book needs to sell so the publisher will make ads for the book.

Picture Exchange

Dear Classmate,
This is a photo of my brother, sister, and I waterskiing.  My sisters name is Rebecca, and she is two and a half years younger than I am.  My brothers name is John, and he is eight years younger than I am.  We all love to go waterskiing and have been skiing since we were very little.  This is a river where our cabin is located, called the New Jersey Flowage.  It is dammed off on both ends so technically it is called a flowage.  Our cabin is located deep in the north woods of wisconsin.  The small town is called Tomahawk.  We drive to Tomahawk as often as we can during the summer and the winter to get away and have a fun family vacation.  This is one of my favorite places to go. Waterskiing is very important to me.  I am going to join the club waterski and wakeboard team here at ISU because of my love for the sport.  When I was eight years old my grandfather taught me how to waterski.  Everyone on my mom’s side of the family waterskis.  My aunt and uncle both skied at the Tommy Bartlett Water Ski Show.  I eventually will be skiing there also.  I worked there over the summer and loved every minute of it.  Two of my cousins are semi-professional waterskiers.  The oldest, Tyler, just won nationals in three event.  Three event is a tournament style of waterskiing, where you compete in three events which gives it the name.  The three events are Slalom, which is skiing around buoys on one ski, Trick, which is a specially designed slalom ski that people can do flips and spins on, and finally Jump skiing, which is an even where you go over a ramp and try to soar threw the air as far as you can.  This picture is very special to me because has all the things that are special to me in one photo.  My brother and sister are very special to me, I love my cabin in Tomahawk, and I love waterskiing.
Now you know,

3 genres Textbooks, Texting, and Advertisement

When I am reading a textbook I am looking to understand the information and go in depth. I read textbooks for school strictly and would never touch them if I wasn't learning from them. But when I read text message I imagine the conversation.  Then I quickly think of a response and send it. And just wait for another text. You have to wait for the information to come, but for textbooks and advertisements its all right in front of you. Advertisements are a whole different thing. When I read an advertisement I read it out of bordom and think about whether I need this product or not.  I read all types in different ways and its hard to read a textbook like a text message, or a advertisement like a textbook.  That just doesn't happen. These three genres are all very different in my mind and they rarely mix.
